In the NHL, we have “The Battle of Pennsylvania”, an intense in-state rivalry in what could be the most entertaining first round matchup. Get your popcorn ready.

The stakes: Not every first round series comes with this kind of star power. For the first time since the 2018 NBA Finals, LeBron James and Kevin Durant are meeting in the playoffs. Two of the best to ever play the game. This will be an exciting matchup and one that needs to be appreciated while these stars are still able to compete at this level.
The Lakers won seven of their last ten but are walking in shorthanded. Luka Doncic is out with a hamstring strain and Austin Reaves is out for at least the first round with an oblique injury. Together they account for nearly 57 points per game. The Rockets won nine of their last ten and look like a different team from the inconsistent group that drew criticism throughout the season.
The stakes in this series are huge for both LeBron and KD. For Durant, this may be his last opportunity to win a championship, something he’s been chasing to cement his legacy since leaving the Warriors in 2019. For LeBron, a disappointing exit could mean the end of his time in Los Angeles.
What to watch for: Kevin Durant vs. LeBron James. With Luka and Reeves out, LeBron will be asked to carry a shorthanded roster the way he did time and time again in the late 2010s willing outmatched teams deep into the playoffs on sheer individual dominance. The question is whether he has that gear left at age 41.
On the other side Durant was brought to Houston for exactly these moments in the playoffs. At 37, Durant remains one of the most unguardable scorers in the game. The Lakers have no obvious answer for him, and Houston will lean on that all series long. Watch which player still has the most juice left as that will be the difference in this game and ultimately the series.
The Betting Angle [Powered by WagerXpert]: The public is on Houston as they are -5.5 road favorites. With the Lakers missing Luka and Reaves and Rockets seemingly rounding into form, on the surface the Rockets are the pick here.
But LeBron in the playoffs with his back against the wall has a way of keeping games closer than they should be. Historically, LeBron led teams are resilient in Game 1 scenarios where the public has written them off. While he is missing his top two scoring threats, LeBron’s ability to takeover when needed and elevate his teammates usually keeps games closer than the spread suggests.
The +5.5 is a bet on LeBron's playoff experience. History says he usually finds a way to cover in these Game 1 situations.

NUGGETS VS TIMBERWOLVES | SATURDAY 3:30PM, PRIME VIDEO
The stakes: Denver and Minnesota are meeting in the postseason for the third time in four years, and this series has turned into a must-watch playoff rivalry.
The Nuggets have home court advantage and the best player in the series, Nikola Jokić. But they haven’t forgotten what happened against the Timberwolves in 2024. Two years ago, Minnesota erased a 20-point second-half deficit in Game 7 in Denver, one of the largest comebacks in NBA playoff history, and knocked out the defending champions. The Timberwolves come into this one confident knowing they've got to this team before.
What to watch for: This series comes down to Nikola Jokić and Anthony Edwards. Jokić dominated the season series and put up 56 points against Minnesota on Christmas Day. There is no stopping him, only containing him. Edwards is the wild card to watch in this matchup.
He's been battling a knee injury since March and missed 11 of the last 14 games of the season. But playoff Ant is different and it’s been reported he’s ready to go for this game. He's the only player on the Timberwolves capable of going for 40 on any given night and completely changing the momentum.
Watch Edwards early. Is he the same superstar player we’ve seen dominate in the playoffs or will his knee limit him this series and beyond?
The Betting Angle [Powered by WagerXpert]: Denver is a -6.5 home favorite and the Nuggets went 3-0 against the spread in their first three meetings with Minnesota this season. Although the Wolves won the most recent meeting in Denver, there are still many question marks surrounding this team.
Given the uncertainty of Edwards and inconsistency of the Timberwolves, we’d back the Nuggets to win and cover the spread as the better team at home.
NHL PLAYOFFS
PENGUINS VS FLYERS | SATURDAY TBA

Gif by nhl on Giphy
The stakes: This in-state rivalry, referred to as the “Battle of Pennsylvania”, is back in the playoffs for the first time in eight years. These two franchises have met seven times in the postseason since 1989, and it has always been intense. The Penguins won the last series in 2018. The Flyers lead the all-time playoff series 4-3.
The Penguins are relying on an aging core of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang in what could be one of their last deep playoff runs. This is their window and they know it.
The Flyers are back in the postseason for the first time since 2020, punching their postseason ticket with a shootout win over Carolina on the final Monday of the regular season. Led by Travis Konecny and Trevor Zegras, this is a young group that knows it wasn’t easy getting here and that this opportunity isn't guaranteed to come around soon.
What to watch for: Start with Sidney Crosby. In 23 career playoff games against Philadelphia, he has 15 goal and 21 assists. He has owned this rivalry on the biggest stage.
Pittsburgh has one of the most dangerous offensive groups in the playoffs and loves to get out on the rush. The problem is Philadelphia is built to slow exactly that down. The Flyers ranked top-ten defensively this season and play a suffocating, physical style. This is your classic irresistible force meets immovable object situation. Watch which unit gets the upper hand, it will likely decide the series.
The Betting Angle [Powered by WagerXpert]: Lines haven’t been released yet, but we project Pittsburgh to open around a -150 moneyline favorite in this one. With that said, there’s a rest vs. rust factor worth considering. The Penguins clinched over a week ago while Philadelphia was fighting for their playoff spot earlier this week. The hotter team in Game 1 of a rivalry series tends to show up ready and Philadelphia loves to play the villain on the road against this team.
The Flyers on the moneyline as a road underdog is a great look here.
